He drinks too much, and because Olivia is a god-fearing cat who loves Ted despite her disgust with his bad habits, she stays permanently indoors, only having a few glimpses of a neighborhood cat to look forward to each day. Ted and Olivia live mostly in the dark because he’s boarded up the windows with plywood. He has only his cat Olivia for company, and he rarely leaves the house. Ted is a middle-aged, jobless man who lives by himself in the house he grew up in as a child. And yet, it was unputdownable despite this dark subject matter, so although it’s not the spooky haunted house I was expecting for my Halloween reading, I was terrified all the same. I pushed through because I suspected (based on the cover blurbs) that I was purposely being misled, and the twist of all twists eventually changed my mind, but I do feel as though this book should come with some sort of trigger warning because it delves quite deeply into child abuse and neglect. The writing itself was not the problem, it was what the characters were doing to each other, or at least, what we are led to believe they are doing to each other. I got about halfway through The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward and debated closing the book for good – I just wasn’t sure I could handle it anymore. DESCRIPTION : One part Mari Andrew, one part Marjane Satrapi, I Was Their American Dream: A Graphic Memoir is a triumphant tale of self-discovery, a celebration of a family's rich heritage, and a love letter to American immigrant freedom. This includes the freedom to finally act on the same-sex attraction he’s struggled to suppress and keep hidden all his life. A freshman in his first semester at an HBCU and miles away from home and his devout mother’s scornful eye, he finally has the freedom to be himself. And if they did hook up, will Damion prove to be the man who mends his broken heart, or will he shatter it beyond repair?ĭamion Patterson is facing a dilemma. However, when his teammate’s ruggedly handsome cousin Damion seems to show interest in him, Eddie gradually finds himself questioning his vow to stay solo. After reaching his breaking point, the college junior switched up and vowed to never get in another committed relationship again. The final straw was catching his boyfriend cheating on him with his best friend. Or at least he used to be until a series of bad experiences soured him on relationships. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. “What keeps us from sitting down is Resistance.”.“It’s not the writing part that’s hard. The power to take charge is in your hands all you had to do is believe it.“The best and only thing that one artist can do for another is to serve as an example and an inspiration.”.“The awakening artist must be ruthless, not only with herself but with others.”. “If you take Resistance at its word, you deserve everything you get.”.Its aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work.” We experience it as an energy field radiating from a work-in-potential. “Resistance cannot be seen, touched, heard, or smelled. Most of us have two lives: The life we live before we turn pro and the life after.Resistance is what keeps us from sitting down and doing our best work. Because at its core, Part of Your World is the perfect love story that made me swoon, sigh, cheer, and even cry a little. Or perhaps it’s just Abby Jimenez’s talent for layering complex, realistic themes with the sweetest of romances. Maybe it’s the sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-wrenching, always scene-stealing extended cast that has me hoping for lots and lots of sequels. Maybe it’s the magical, whimsical setting of Wakan, a fictional place that feels like the delightful combination of a Disney amusement park and Schitt’s Creek. Maybe it’s because of the relatable characters: Alexis, the big-city physician who swerves to avoid fate (i.e., our beloved raccoon), and Daniel, the small-town carpenter/innkeeper/mayor who tows her out of a ditch. I’ve loved this author ever since her debut, but Part of Your World is her best book yet. Not something I ever thought I’d say, but Abby Jimenez’s beautiful writing has me believing it. I'm an unbeliever and have been since the first time I played hooky from Sunday services and the Eye in the Sky didn’t say boo. As a result of being a a central figure in Chinese culture, both nobility and common people claim Lao Tzu in their lineage. Historians variously contend that Laozi is a synthesis of multiple historical figures, that he is a mythical figure, or that he actually lived in the 5th-4th century BCE, concurrent with the Hundred Schools of Thought and Warring States Period. Laozi translated literally from Chinese means "old master" or "old one", and is generally considered honorific.Īccording to Chinese tradition, Laozi lived in the 6th century BCE. He is also revered as a deity in most religious forms of the Taoist religion, which often refers to Laozi as Taishang Laojun, or "One of the Three Pure Ones". His association with the Tao Te Ching has led him to be traditionally considered the founder of Taoism (pronounced as "Daoism"). Lao Tzu (Chinese: 老子 pinyin: Lǎozǐ Wade-Giles: Laosi also Laozi, Lao Tse, Lao Tu, Lao-Tsu, Laotze, Laosi, Lao Zi, Laocius, Lao Ce, and other variations) was a mystic philosopher of ancient China, best known as the author of the Tao Te Ching (often simply referred to as Laozi). So once you’ve read it you will want to move straight onto book 2, Uncommon Criminals. It is exciting, clever and downright addictive. So what if it’s a spectacularly impossible job?
